What is a CPU/GPU bottleneck?

A bottleneck happens when one component (CPU or GPU) finishes its work faster than the other, leaving the faster part idle. The slower part becomes the limiting factor, and upgrading the faster part won't improve real-world performance until the slower part is upgraded too.

How does this calculator work?

Each CPU and GPU is normalized to a 0–100 performance index per workload (gaming, productivity, streaming, AI) and resolution, derived from PassMark, TechPowerUp, and per-game FPS benchmarks. The ratio between the two indices, adjusted for resolution and workload, is classified as cpu-bound, gpu-bound, or balanced.

How accurate are the FPS predictions?

Each FPS prediction carries a confidence indicator. HIGH means the exact CPU+GPU+game+resolution combo is in our measured benchmark data. MEDIUM means we interpolated from a near match. LOW means we estimated from performance indices alone. Confidence is shown alongside every result.

What does the percentage mean?

Accepted Answer

The percentage represents the magnitude of the imbalance between your CPU and GPU. A 0% result means the build is balanced; higher percentages indicate one part has more headroom than the other can use. We cap the magnitude at 45% because heuristic precision beyond that point would be misleading.
