How we ran it
We took all 52 CPUs and 54 GPUs in our catalog and ran every possible pair — 2,808 of them — through the same bottleneck engine that powers the calculator, at three resolutions. Each pairing is classified as CPU-bound (the processor holds the graphics card back), GPU-bound (the graphics card is the limit and the CPU has headroom — the healthy case), or balanced (neither meaningfully bottlenecks the other). These numbers recompute from the live catalog, so they stay current as we add parts.
The headline numbers
At 1440p— the resolution most PC gamers actually use — here’s how the 2,808 pairings shake out:
The takeaway most builders get wrong: being GPU-bound is the goal, not a problem. It means the graphics card is the thing working hardest and the CPU has room to spare — you’re getting the frames you paid the GPU for. When a mismatch does happen at 1440p, the average shortfall is about 19%.
Resolution flips the answer
The single most important finding: the same pair of parts gives a different verdict at a different resolution. As you go up in resolution, work shifts to the GPU, so CPU bottlenecks fade. Across our 2,808 pairings, the share that are CPU-bound drops steeply from 1080p to 4K:
CPU-bound pairings fall from 21% at 1080p to 9% at 4K. This is exactly why “will X bottleneck Y” has no single answer — it depends entirely on the resolution you play at. A pair that’s CPU-limited on a 1080p high-refresh monitor can be perfectly balanced on a 4K one.
The budget-CPU surprise
You don’t need a flagship CPU to run a serious GPU. Of the processors under $300 in our catalog, the AMD Ryzen 5 7500F ($179) keeps up with 54 of the 54 GPUs at 1440p — meaning it is notthe bottleneck in those pairings. For most builders, that’s the whole ballgame: at 1440p and 4K you’re GPU-bound anyway, so a smart mid-range CPU frees up budget for the graphics card that actually sets your frame rate.
The most striking case: even paired with the fastest GPU in our catalog (the RX 7900 XT) at 4K, the cheapest CPU that still isn’t the bottleneck is the Intel Core i5-12400F ($174). At 4K the GPU does so much of the work that even a modest processor keeps pace.
