Best CPU for RTX 4070 Super in 2026.

Five picks tested with our bottleneck calculator. The 4070 Super is a 1440p value card, so the goal is a strong CPU without overspending — here's the value-match and the alternatives, with a live pair page for each.

Does the CPU matter with a 4070 Super?

Less than you might think — and that’s the good news. The RTX 4070 Super is a 1440p card, and at 1440p high/ultra you’re usually GPU-bound: the graphics card is the thing working hardest, so a mid-range CPU keeps up with a flagship in most games. Spending Ryzen 7 7800X3D money next to a 4070 Super mostly buys frames the card can’t render anyway.

The exception is 1080p high-refresh. Drop the resolution and the 4070 Super can push well past 144 FPS in esports and fast shooters, and there the CPU decides whether you actually see those frames. If that describes how you play, the extra cache of an X3D chip earns its keep. For everyone at 1440p with a 60–165 Hz screen, a Ryzen 5 7600 is the honest sweet spot.

See our CPU vs GPU bottleneck pillar for why resolution and refresh rate flip the answer.

The 5 picks

  1. 01 · THE VALUE-MATCH SWEET SPOT

    AMD Ryzen 5 7600

MSRP $229 · BEST FOR 1440P GAMING VALUE

For a 4070 Super this is the pick most people should make. Six Zen 4 cores at 5.1 GHz feed the card fully at 1440p, run cool on the bundled cooler, and cost a fraction of a flagship. It's on AM5, so a 7800X3D or a future 9000-series chip drops straight in when you upgrade the GPU. Genuinely hard to beat for the money.

  2. 02 · IF YOU CHASE HIGH-REFRESH

    AMD Ryzen 7 7800X3D

    MSRP $449 · BEST FOR 1080P HIGH-REFRESH / FUTURE GPU

The best gaming CPU you can sensibly pair here, but only worth it if you play 1080p competitive or CPU-heavy sims and strategy where its 3D V-Cache turns into real frames. At 1440p on a 4070 Super the gap to a Ryzen 5 7600 shrinks a lot because you're GPU-bound. Buy it if high-refresh is your thing or you plan a much bigger GPU next.

  3. 03 · THE 8-CORE STEP UP

    AMD Ryzen 7 7700X

MSRP $329 · BEST FOR GAMING + LIGHT CREATOR WORK

Eight Zen 4 cores at 5.4 GHz — a small gaming bump over the Ryzen 5 7600 and a real one in multi-threaded work like streaming, rendering, and heavy multitasking. If your build does more than game and you want AM5 headroom without the X3D premium, this is the balanced middle option for a 4070 Super.

  4. 04 · THE BUDGET ALL-ROUNDER

    Intel Core i5-13400F

    MSRP $196 · BEST FOR TIGHTEST-BUDGET 1440P BUILDS

Ten cores (6P+4E) that punch above their price and keep a 4070 Super fed at 1440p. A smart pick if you find a cheap LGA1700 board bundle or want to spend the savings on a better GPU or an SSD. A touch behind the Ryzen 5 7600 in the most CPU-bound games, but a strong value pairing.

  5. 05 · EXISTING-PLATFORM STOPGAP

    AMD Ryzen 5 5600 (AM4 only)

    MSRP $199 · BEST FOR COUNTER-EXAMPLE — AM4 STOPGAP ONLY

Only worth it if you already own an AM4 board and want a cheap drop-in that won't badly hold back a 4070 Super at 1440p. It caps some frames at 1080p high-refresh, and AM4 is a dead-end socket with no path to next-gen chips. For a new build, spend the small extra on a Ryzen 5 7600 and the AM5 upgrade path.

Which one should you actually buy?

  • MOST PEOPLERyzen 5 7600. Feeds the 4070 Super fully at 1440p, runs on the box cooler, and gives you the AM5 upgrade path. Pair with DDR5-6000 CL30.
  • HIGH-REFRESHRyzen 7 7800X3D if you play 1080p competitive or CPU-heavy sims and want every frame the card can give.
  • CREATOR MIXRyzen 7 7700X for eight cores if you stream or render alongside gaming, without the X3D premium.
  • TIGHT BUDGETCore i5-13400F, and put the savings toward the GPU or a fast SSD.

Platform + PSU notes

The RTX 4070 Super draws around 220 W. With a 65–105 W CPU, a 650 W 80+ Gold PSU is the comfortable recommendation (550 W is the practical floor) and leaves room for a future GPU upgrade.

For RAM, aim for DDR5-6000 CL30on AM5 — the sweet spot for the Infinity Fabric clock. Slow JEDEC-default memory costs real FPS in CPU-bound scenes, so it’s worth the small premium even on a value build.

FAQ

  • What is the best CPU for an RTX 4070 Super in 2026?

The AMD Ryzen 5 7600 — it's the value-match. Six Zen 4 cores keep the 4070 Super fed at 1440p without paying for a flagship the card can't use. It's the pick most 4070 Super buyers should make. Step up to a Ryzen 7 7800X3D only if you chase 1080p high-refresh in shooters and sims.

  • Do I need an X3D CPU for a 4070 Super?

No. The 4070 Super is a 1440p card, and at 1440p you're usually GPU-bound, so a Ryzen 5 7600 or Core i5-13400F keeps pace with much pricier chips. The X3D cache only pulls ahead at 1080p high-refresh and in CPU-heavy strategy/sim titles. For most 4070 Super builds, that money is better spent elsewhere.

  • Will a Ryzen 5 5600 bottleneck an RTX 4070 Super?

At 1440p it mostly keeps up — the 4070 Super isn't fast enough to leave a 5600 far behind at that resolution. At 1080p high-refresh you'll cap some frames versus a Ryzen 5 7600. If you already own an AM4 board it's a fine, cheap pairing; for a new build, the 7600 on AM5 gives you an upgrade path for little more.

  • What PSU do I need for an RTX 4070 Super build?

650 W 80+ Gold is the comfortable recommendation, 550 W the practical minimum. The RTX 4070 Super draws around 220 W; with a 65–105 W CPU and the rest of the system, a 650 W unit leaves clean headroom and room for a future GPU upgrade.

  • Is the RTX 4070 Super a 1440p or 4K card?

It's a 1440p high-refresh card first — it runs most titles at 1440p high/ultra above 60 FPS, and competitive games far higher. It can do 4K with DLSS and some settings tuning, but 1440p is its home. That's exactly why a mid-range CPU like the Ryzen 5 7600 is the right match rather than a flagship.
